For me like most drummers I have started finding my snare sound.
I want something that can be what ever I need it to be. Great smack, great highs, great lows, and a lot of resonance control. I started by looking at snares that resemble Travis Barkers to help listen through snares through a crisp and loud perspective. But felt I was missing out on the wonderful resonance of jazz and concert snares. That lead me to the Tama Black Beauty. The more I listened to the black beauty, I started realizing I didn’t want the amount of resonance it gives. I felt it was to concert/jazzy and wouldn’t get me the hip hop and fusion sounds I also wanted. I listened to 40 different snares and finally landed on one that I felt had the sound and versatility I wanted to capture in one snare. The Gretch Brooklyn Standard.
This snare did it for me. Great highs and lows. An internal dampener for resonance control and very responsive. What a great snare sound. I was sold.
Next priority items on my sound journey, my high hat and kick.
